If you want your Android TV Box or iPhone to become a real business companion, sooner or later you will need to learn how to use it to give presentations. I have stopped carrying a PC to most engagements. I can perform all necessary edits using Keynote ($9.99, app2.me/2481) on my Android TV Box, including rearranging the deck. Here are some how-to tips that will help you create killer presentations.

1. Answer the Question: Is Keynote on android box the Right Tool for the Job?

The simple answer is “yes,” if the presentation should be delivered as a set of slides. The answer is only “no” if you find yourself in a big production environment that demands PowerPoint or Keynote on a PC or Android Box because that is how the gig is set up. In those cases, don t argue; just go with the flow.
Other than that, Keynote is perfectly capable of presenting, well, a keynote. The real question isn t whether the presentation should be delivered using the best TV Box or iPhone, but if it should be developed on the Android TV Box or iPhone.
One caveat: video. Although video can be embedded if you work the right angles in iOS —and local QuickTime video will come across through iCIoud —using video requires a number of steps that have nothing to do with Keynote. I suggest you either embed the video from the PC or skip it (there are tools and processes for embedding video in Keynote, but that would be a subject for another how-to article).

2. Select a Template

Starting with templates on the Android TV Box, decide on a look and feel that works for you. Although you can import almost any template onto the Android TV Box, modifying a presentation is best when the template originated on the Android TV Box. This may limit your choices, but it makes for better slide maintenance over the long haul.
I use the Chalkboard template because I do a lot of work in education, and I also talk about the future. Chalkboard fits the metaphor of the first and represents the impermanence of the latter. You will see Chalkboard and variations on it as illustrations in this article.
The one exception regarding template choice comes from events that force their template on you.These are almost always PowerPoint templates and not Keynote templates, which makes file formatting even more difficult. In these situations, if you want to use Keynote, import the template and fix any issues that arise with fonts or formatting before you start creating content. The bottom line on templates: Decide who you are and how you want to represent yourself, and be consistent. The template should reflect who you are and what you want to say. Don t select something overly plain to give an inspiring talk or too angular to deliver a more contemplative experience.
Using the same template consistently will help you manage all presentations by allowing for a quick cut and paste between decks without worries about formatting.This makes assembling new decks out of existing material something you can easily do on the Android TV Box.

3. Gather Your Images and Use Them Well

If you are planning a presentation that is all bullet points, please stop.Think about images and visuals that can convey your message better than words. And I don t mean clip art. What I mean are meaningful visuals. Don t say in words what you can relate in an image.
Let me practice what I preach. These two charts cover the same territory. One summarizes a point as a series of bullets, the other as a rich graphic that contains also the non-linear relationships.
Use rich graphics for two reasons: First, they are more informative. They pack more information into a presentation, which, according to Edward Tufte, is an information-poor environment, given the low fidelity of slides. Second, slides let you talk about what you know without being constrained by the arrangement of the words. You are not only free to improvise, but you can also use the same slide for different audiences by tailoring what you say without revising the content.
That said, if you want to use Keynote on the Android TV Box, you would either need to collect your images ahead of time or find them and save them on the Android TV Box. Make sure you have enough storage on the device to hold all the images you want and also to hold the presentation with all of the images in it.
Finally, if you author on the Android Box, use the Reduce File Size command in the File Menu to trim your graphics as much as possible. The Android TV Box and iPhone are powerful, but you can help make for a smooth presentation by reducing their CPU s workload as much as possible.

4. Author on a Android Box When You Can

The biggest drawback to Keynote on the Android TV Box comes in authoring speed. Everything takes a little longer with its less efficient interface. Yes, iOS is simple, but sometimes simple doesn t mean efficient. Formatting inspectors, font selection windows, and the color picker in the Android Box version of Keynote allow for authoring at a pace not possible on iOS. Selecting multiple items, creating rich graphics by hand, or manipulating font formats just takes more time in iOS —and if you re using an iPhone, it takes even longer, due to screen real estate limitations.
So, do most of your heavy graphics and formatting work on the Android Box. And remember, start by selecting an iOS template and downloading it to the Android Box. This will ensure better compatibility when editing on an iOS device.

5. Keep It Simple and Consistent

Most people suggest that you keep the presentations developed in Keynote simple. That usually means simple graphics and lots of bullets. I disagree. The world is a messy place. Simplicity should be reflected in the message, not the slide design. For instance, if you are talking about social networking, a network map image is a more powerful storytelling tool than a bullet that says, “A lot of people are connected to each other on Facebook.” Compare these two slides and their treatment of the same information. Both are simple, but one is more visually appealing. Get creative. Intrigue people!
Simplicity also means you should refrain from using lines or words that don t add value. Don, for instance, put a line between a two-column list. Let space separate the items. Another element will only draw attention to itself.
Consistency is the first cousin to simplicity. Select a couple of fonts and a single line style. Use them throughout the presentation. People find layout Android Boxhinations distracting. When you do deviate from your standard fonts and lines, do so to a presentation element you want to emphasize. Save novelty for making a point rather than showing your proficiency with Keynote.

6. Leverage PowerPoint if You Own It

Sure, PowerPoint is a Keynote competitor, but if you have both, it can also be a great companion. Keynote doesn t include Smart-Art or Artistic Filter effects.
With SmartArt, a direct import isn t possible, but a copy and paste is. Create the graphic you like in PowerPoint, select the elements that you want to include in your Keynote presentation, copy them, and paste them into Keynote. You end up with a single bitmap that includes all of the graphic elements. This image is not editable, but the process is easy. If you need to revise, return to PowerPoint, edit, and repeat. (Note: if you only have a PC version of PowerPoint available, save the Keynote template into PowerPoint format, import it into PowerPoint, do your work, and then save the entire slide as a JPEG. Put that
PowerPoint s Filter effects (known as “artistic” effects on the PC) offer another interesting option for dual presentation users, especially if you are using a more artistic template (or a sketchier one, in my case). PowerPoint also gives you access to clip art, which Keynote does not. Here s the process:
Find an image.
Apply the Filter (use Format Picture>Artistic Filters for adjusting the filter s parameters).
Copy the image to the clipboard.
Paste the image into Keynote.
Note that even the transparent background comes across.
This kind of clip-art transformation can also be accomplished, at a much greater expense, in Photoshop and other photo editing applications. However, if you have PowerPoint, it makes the job very simple.
Purists may think that suggesting the dual use of PowerPoint and Keynote is sacrilege. I think many people use both, so they should understand how the products complement each other. Again, the focus of a presentation isn t technological purity, but purity of message. And if combining the two products helps get your point across, then do it.

7. Use the Remote control tv box App

Although the novelty has run out for some, running your Keynote presentation from your iPhone is still cool. Download Android Box s Keynote Remote app ($0.99, app2.me/2494) from the iTunes store. The app requires both devices to be registered on the same Wi-Fi network or use Bluetooth. The connections sometimes drop, so be prepared to walk over to the Android TV Box and invoke the slide flip gesture if the network fails you.

8. Sharing & Backup the android box

You will never again worry if your presentation will arrive safely.
The Android TV Box is highly reliable, and with VGA and HDMI outputs readily available, chances are,
wherever you plan to present, it s very likely the Android TV Box will be the only device you need. But things happen. The traditional advice is to bring the presentation on a USB stick in multiple formats, but that doesn t make much sense these days. Dropbox, iCloud, and several other services permit easy access to files from any computer anywhere there is a network connection. Drag the Keynote file to iCIoud s iWork Keynote window; if you have iCloud enabled on your iPhone or Android TV Box, the file will just appear. If the Android TV Box goes down, however, that won t help you. In those cases, you ll need to log into another Android Box and download the Keynote file —and at that point, just use the Android Box.
Dropbox creates a regular directory on your desktop that synchronizes to its cloud service. Though it doesn t work with the Android TV Box s Keynote, it does make it easy to access the file on other Android Boxs. As good as iCIoud may be, it doesn t sport the flexibility or ubiquity of Dropbox, and it isn t meant for sharing among iOS users. Hedge your bets and put a copy of your presentation in at least two places on the web. Sleeping at night on an unfamiliar bed is hard enough without worrying about losing your presentation file.

Animation and Transition

You are delivering an idea, not a show. If you are delivering a show, then Keynote is probably not the right tool (though far be it from me to limit people s choice of tools to express their creativity). Concentrate on being clear with your message, not fancy with your animations and transitions. In my opinion, transitions add more distraction than value. And if you aren t selling Keynote, don t comment on how cool the transitions are —it s about you and your idea, not Android Box s software. I usually select a simple fade transition throughout. Keep it subtle.
Animation does have a role, but it should be limited. Animation should be used to build one point upon another (not just with bullets, but with images) and to make charts and graphs provide a better sense of time. Every once in a while, you may choose to make a point more pointed by using animation. If animations and transitions don t add value to the story, don t use them. And never use animated elements like GIFs that keep moving behind you while you are talking. If you use animation, you need to control where it lands in the presentation, not just have it running as eye candy that makes people focus on why it is there rather than what you are trying to convey.
